We operate a jail and communications component under the Kotzebue Regional Jail structure (KRJ). The Police Department and Regional Jail operate 24/7 all year with communications for the Police, Fire, Ambulance and the Alaska State Troopers assigned to the Kotzebue post. Kotzebue is the E-911/ 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the NANA region.

Kotzebue Police Department was formed in 1969. Prior to that, law enforcement was accomplished by the Alaska State Troopers, and in past territorial days by the U.S. Marshal Service.

The Kotzebue Police Department/ Regional Jail (KRJ) operates one of the largest state contract jails and receives prisoners from an area of about 32,000 square miles (about the size of North Carolina or Maine).

What Are the Signs of an Opioid Overdose?

Opioids affect the body’s receptors that are related to breathing, which causes breathing to become slow and shallow. A person’s breathing can stop within minutes to hours after using the drug. Once breathing stops, brain damage can start within three to five minutes without oxygen, leading to death.
